The Quiet battle of ‘shoulds’

You know those days. The ones where every piece of advice, every perfectly curated feed, every “expert” telling you what you should be doing starts to feel like a weight?

“You should be on that new platform.”

“You should have a 7-figure launch by now.”

“You should be hustling 24/7 if you really want it.”

I’ve been there, swallowed by the tidal wave of “shoulds,” trying to force my business into a mold that just didn’t fit me. It led to burnout, confusion, and frankly, a loss of joy in what I was building.

The unfiltered truth? Most of those “shoulds” are someone else’s strategy, designed for their strengths, their audience, their season. And crucially, they’re often designed to sell you something. The “should be” is more often than not a hustle created to force an emotion on you, that makes you feel lacking and wanting. To push you toward buying their solution. Check out my previous post on ignoring the guru to see more about their blueprint.

My biggest breakthrough wasn’t following a new blueprint; it was silencing the noise and listening to my own inner strategist. It was realizing that my business, built on my values, for my unique clients, needed my unique path.

I spent 4 years in real estate. I found that I was really good at what I did. What I didn’t see was a healthy way to build and scale my business. It started out that I wanted to help others in their lives, and become a healthy role model for my children, while still having a career that I could stay present with them. I’ll tell you right now – the “shoulds” and “our solutions” were overwhelming.

It starts with, “how can I get more business in less time”, “what systems can help me maximize”, to “wait, now I have to be popular on social media too!?”, which then creates more systems, checklists, materials, and above all things TIME and MONEY.

It’s easy to fall prey to ‘shiny object syndrome’ in business. But does that mean you should never invest in programs, systems, or resources? Absolutely not. As entrepreneurs, our job is to silence the noise, see past the sales pitch, and discern what genuinely delivers ROI for the investment we need, not just impulsively want.

What’s one “should” you’re actively trying to ditch in your business right now? Share it below – let’s give ourselves permission to build on our own terms.
